Fix a cold tumbling dryer with this 279838 heating element, the most common coil assembly behind no-heat and long-dry-time complaints on Whirlpool-family 27 inch electric dryers. Built to the published WP279838 electrical and dimensional spec, it drops into the existing flat-can heater housing and restores normal 240V drying temperature without replacing the whole rear panel.

Symptoms This Fixes
-
Dryer tumbles but produces no heat
-
Long drying times or clothes still damp after high-heat cycle
-
Visible broken sagging or burnt coil inside the heater box
-
Dryer shuts off early because a shorted coil tripped the high-limit or fuse
-
Multimeter shows no continuity across the two element terminals
Why Replace Element Alone
The 279838 is the heat source. If your thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat still reads closed with a meter, you only need the coil. Swapping those safety parts unnecessarily adds cost, though many techs replace the full 279838 plus 3392519 and 3977393 kit to avoid a second teardown when the vent has been restricted for a long time.
Install Notes
-
Unplug the dryer at the wall before removing the rear or front panel, 240V will arc and bite
-
Pull the old element screws, lift the coil out, seat the new one without letting the wire touch the metal can
-
Check the lint screen and exhaust duct while open, restricted airflow is the number one cause of repeated element burnout
-
Test old thermostat and fuse with a multimeter for continuity before spending on new ones
-
Basic 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch nut driver plus needle-nose pliers, 20 to 40 minutes for most DIYers
